Born to Carl Gottfried and Johanne Rosina (Koerner) Guenther in Weissenfels, Germany, Carl Hilmar Guenther (1826-1902) immigrated to the United States in 1848. Settling near Fredericksburg, Texas, in 1851, he established a gristmill and flourmill. In 1855, Guenther married Dorothea Wilhelmine Henriette Pape, with whom he had seven children, including Fritz, Arthur, and Erhard.
